What a Shopify website costs in India in 2026.

If you are planning a Shopify store, or rebuilding one that has stopped keeping up, the first question is usually what Shopify website development costs in India. Here is a straight answer: what you get for your money with each option, what pushes a quote up, and the costs that come after launch.

01 · Short answer

The short answer.

There are three common routes to a Shopify storefront, and they cost very different amounts:

  • Premium theme from the Shopify Theme Store: a one-time licence per store. In October 2026, paid themes on the Theme Store range from about US$100 to US$500, and most sit between roughly US$200 and US$400. Setup and customisation are extra.
  • Freelancer customising a theme or building one: prices vary a lot with skill and scope. You can get very good work or very poor work at almost any price, so judge the portfolio, not the rate.
  • Custom theme from a studio: designed and coded for your brand. At Ary-keting this starts at ₹1.5L, and larger builds start at ₹2.75L and ₹4.5L.

The right answer depends less on budget than on how you sell. A brand with twenty products and one hero offer has different needs from a brand with hundreds of SKUs, bundles, variants and a sales team on WhatsApp.

02 · Option 1

Option 1: a premium theme.

A premium theme is a ready-made design you licence and then fill with your own content. It is the fastest and cheapest way to get a professional-looking store, and good themes are well maintained and updated for new Shopify features.

Good for: new brands testing the market, small catalogues, simple product pages, founders who are happy to work inside someone else's layout.

Watch out for: every theme is built to serve thousands of stores, so it ships code and settings for features you will never use. Your store also looks like the many other stores on the same theme. And once you start bending a theme heavily with apps and custom code, you can end up paying custom-theme money for a patched template.

If you want to start on a premium theme, Noir Commerce is our own, and you can customise it later. We also built Soma. See the Noir Commerce Shopify theme →

03 · Option 2

Option 2: a freelancer.

Freelancers range from beginners who install a theme and change the colours to senior Liquid developers who are as good as any agency. A strong freelancer is often the best value for a clear, contained job: a new section, a faster product page, a set of fixes.

Good for: well-defined tasks, brands that already have a designer, tight budgets.

Watch out for: one person usually means one skill set. Design, development, testing and launch support may not all be covered, and if the freelancer becomes unavailable, nobody else knows the code. Ask who will maintain the theme after launch, and make sure the code lives in your Shopify account, not theirs.

04 · Option 3

Option 3: a custom theme from a studio.

A custom theme is designed around your brand and your buyers, then written in Liquid as Online Store 2.0 sections your team can edit without a developer. You pay more upfront, and in return the store does exactly what your business needs and nothing it does not.

Good for: brands with an established product and traffic, larger or more complex catalogues, high-ticket or considered products, and brands that want the store, ads and sales flow to work as one system.

Watch out for: vague scopes. A custom build without a clear list of templates, features and revision rounds is how budgets overrun. Insist on a clear quote against a written scope.

06 · Cost drivers

What drives the cost of a custom theme.

When two quotes for "a custom Shopify theme" differ by lakhs, it is almost always because they cover different work. These are the things that move the number:

  1. Number of templates. Home, collection, product, cart, about, contact, blog, landing pages. Each unique layout is design and build time. A store that needs three different product page layouts costs more than one with a single layout.
  2. Design depth. Applying an existing brand system is quicker than creating one. If you do not yet have a clear visual identity, budget for that work separately or as part of a larger build.
  3. Custom features. Advanced filters, bundles, product configurators, size guides, quick-buy, wholesale pricing. Some are a few hours; some are weeks.
  4. Integrations and apps. Reviews, subscriptions, third-party checkouts, WhatsApp, loyalty programmes. Each one needs testing so it does not slow the store or break on mobile.
  5. Migration. Moving products, customers, orders and URLs from WooCommerce or another platform, and setting up redirects so you do not lose search rankings.
  6. Speed work. Responsive images, lean scripts and fast-loading fonts take deliberate effort. It is worth it: a slow store wastes ad spend.
  7. Testing. Real devices, real browsers, real checkout runs. Cheap builds often skip this, and you find the bugs after launch.
  8. Revisions and support. How many rounds of changes are included, and how long the developer fixes issues after launch.

When two quotes for “a custom Shopify theme” differ by lakhs, it is almost always because they cover different work.

07 · After launch

The costs after launch.

The build fee is not the whole bill. Plan for these as well:

  • Shopify plan: a monthly fee to Shopify, which depends on the plan you choose.
  • Apps: many apps charge monthly. Five apps at a modest fee each add up over a year.
  • Content: product photography, video and copy. A custom theme cannot fix weak product images.
  • GST: check whether the quote includes or excludes GST. Ours, like most, exclude it.
  • Ongoing changes: new campaigns and seasonal pages. Ask what small changes cost after the support period ends.

08 · Example pricing

One example: Ary-keting's pricing.

To make this concrete, here is how we price custom Shopify themes. These are starting points, not ceilings; every brief gets a clear quote before work starts, flexible to your scope.

EssentialFrom ₹1.5L

Up to 6 templates, your brand system, mobile-first, speed pass, 2 revision rounds, 3–4 weeks.

GrowthFrom ₹2.75L

Up to 12 templates, custom sections, filters and bundles, WhatsApp funnel, CRO pass, 5–6 weeks.

FlagshipFrom ₹4.5L

Full custom design system, unlimited templates, app integrations, migration, 60 days support.

09 · Proof

Why the store matters beyond design.

A store is where your ad money either turns into sales or leaks away. For a luxury D2C lighting brand, we run the Shopify store, Meta ads and a WhatsApp sales flow together. From July to October 2026 the brand did ₹1.23 Cr net sales, about 30x ROAS on Meta spend, with sales coming through both the Shopify store and WhatsApp. The store's job there is not only to take orders; it also has to hand serious buyers to a person when they want to talk.

10 · Brief checklist

How to get an accurate quote.

Whoever you talk to, send them this and you will get quotes you can actually compare:

  • Your current store URL, if you have one, and two or three stores you like
  • Number of products and collections, and how variants work (size, finish, colour)
  • The pages you need, and any special features (bundles, filters, configurators)
  • Apps you already use and want to keep
  • Whether you are migrating from another platform
  • Your launch date and budget range

Then ask each developer for a written scope with the number of templates, revision rounds, timeline and post-launch support, and a fixed price against it.

11 · FAQ

Questions.

How much does a custom Shopify theme cost in India?

It depends on the number of templates, how much custom functionality you need and whether you are migrating from another platform. At Ary-keting, custom themes start at ₹1.5L (Essential), ₹2.75L (Growth) and ₹4.5L (Flagship), with a clear quote before work starts, flexible to your scope. Other studios and freelancers will price differently, so compare what each quote includes, not just the total.

Is a premium Shopify theme enough for a new brand?

Often, yes. A paid theme from the Shopify Theme Store is a one-time purchase, usually a few hundred US dollars, and it is a sensible start if your catalogue is simple and you are still testing the market. Move to a custom theme when the template starts getting in the way of how you sell.

How long does a custom Shopify theme take to build?

For our builds, about 3–4 weeks for an Essential build and 5–6 weeks for Growth. Flagship timelines depend on scope and migration. Delays usually come from content: product data, photography and copy arriving late.

Does the theme price include Shopify apps and the Shopify plan?

Usually not. The Shopify plan and most apps are paid separately to Shopify and the app developers, every month. Ask any developer to list the apps your build will need and what they cost before you sign.

Should I hire a freelancer or an agency for a Shopify theme?

A strong freelancer can be the better value for a focused, well-defined job. A studio makes more sense when you need design, development, QA and post-launch support handled together, or when the store has to work closely with your ads and sales flow. Either way, ask to see live stores they built and who will maintain the code after launch.
